Lalochezia - The use of abusive language to relieve stress or ease pain.
“FUCK!”
It wasn’t a hard kick—Dano wasn’t really trying to hurt him—but Eyeburn’s leg crumpled like wet tissue and he went down in a heap.
Dano skittered backwards, expecting retaliation, but the older salarian wasn’t moving. He tilted his head, unsure if it was some kind of trick; Taska had pulled something similar on him more than once, leaping up when he tried to go for her pockets. Wait, no, Eyeburn was moving—his shoulders were shaking, and Dano could discern quick, harsh exhales.
“Why the fuck did you do that, Dano?” he said through clenched teeth. He wasn’t looking up; aside from raising himself on his elbows, he was still in the same position that he’d hit the ground in.
“Whoa, hey, I didn’t do nothing, you just fell—uh, are you alright?” Okay, it definitely wasn’t his best lie, and judging by Eyeburn’s incredulous expression when he finally whipped his head around to stare Dano in the eye, he thought so too. His face was drawn tight and pale, but there wasn’t as much anger in his eye as there was flat-out pain.
Dano started to feel a twist of guilt; it was unfamiliar. He didn’t like it one bit.
“Well, I guess my foot kinda slipped! A-and maybe it kinda hit your leg.” He crossed his arms, looking down on Dimmel like he dared him to argue. But Dimmel wasn’t even looking at him anymore; instead he was pressing his forehead to the ground and closing his eyes. What the shit, did he hit his head when he fell or something? If Dano booked it now, maybe he could get far enough away and call the fatass to go pick Dimmel up.
But Dimmel was taking deep breaths, slowing the rate of his gasps to something almost normal, until he finally cracked one eye open again.
“Why did you do that, Dano?” He still didn’t sound mad. Was he just trying to get Dano to come in closer?
“I didn’t—” Dimmel’s expression flattened. Alright, lying clearly wasn’t working. “You never swear and it’s really fucking weird!”
“You tried to cripple me because I don’t swear enough?”
“Well I didn’t think you were gonna just—” Dano made an expansive gesture with his arms, like a tree falling and exploding.
“No, I don’t think you thought at all.” He couldn’t place the expression on Dimmel’s face; it was a little anger, a little disgust, a little—no, that couldn’t be sadness. Still a lot of pain, though.
“Look—sorry, alright? Whatever,” Dano huffed, throwing up his hands. He didn’t like the stupid pang of guilt he was feeling, or the strange look Dimmel was giving him. “I’m outta here.”
“No.” Dimmel half-sat up, making a strangled groan when he did. “You don’t—shit—you don’t get to drop me like that and waltz out. Go to the freezer, there’s an icepack in there. And then you get to help me to the couch. And I can promise that you’re going to hear me swear a lot more.”
