The Art of District 9 - Early prawn concepts
Weta Workshop’s designers began exploring the world of District 9 in late 2006. At the time, little was known about the film, which was simply referred to as Project X among the Weta crew, but the earliest direction made it clear that it would be similar in setting and tone to Neill Blomkamp’s short film Alive in Joburg, featuring tentacle-faced aliens in a grim South African slum.
The stigmatized aliens themselves would be the first design task tackled by the artists, with a large team contributing ideas in an initial frenzy of conceptualization. The guidelines at the time were that the creatures should have tentacled faces and hands, and be designed with practical creature-suit wearing performers in mind, distorting the recognizable human form wherever possible.

I scanned in these concepts to show you guys what salarians COULD have been wearing in the game. It took me a really long time to figure out what was so different with the first one but then when I looked closely at the chest area I saw the there was this membrane-thing connecting the chest and the stomach. Cute!
I also have to say that 2 and 3 are super interesting! I kinda wish that you could tell each race apart (aside from biological appearance) from their fashion. Most people in mass effect look like buy their clothes from the same store. The ancient egyptian feel to these are really refreshing (there’s so much that they could’ve done with those horns).
My favorite concepts however are 4 and 5.
4 Mostly because OH LOOK THE SALARIAN EQUIVALENT TO NIPPLE PIERCINGS AAAAAH and the loincloth oh gog hnnnnnnggg why didn’t you include this Bioware 5 is super adorable because just look at that scroll in between his horns <33333 ! Can you just imagine a bunch of sallies strolling around the citadel like posh motherfuckers and being just like IDGAF, occasionally stopping to sit on a bench and read their little scrolls (probably filled with poetry about waterfalls)? Other races would be shocked to see salarians wearing nothing but these loin-cloth gowns as casual wear but salarians would see it as a normal thing since nudity isn’t a big deal in their society- okay I think I ought to end this fangirl post right here before it gets out of hand.
Anyway, these concepts were really inspiring! So glad I got this book!
on a distant world.
These are some revamp concepts for a very old and dear character of mine. For some reason I can never decide to go with a certain design and stick to it with this guy. Oh man, you should have seen the first picture I ever drew of this guy. You wouldn’t know it was the same character (or the same artist for that matter).
